Newark and Sherwood Active Festival

On Sunday 24th July, Newark and Sherwood District Council Sports Development team held an Active Festival which consisted of an adult 5 a side football and netball tournament and children’s sports and arts activities in Newark. The festival was organised in partnership with the Olympic Open Weekend Activities supported by BP, marking only 1 year to go until the London 2012 Olympic Games.

The tournament saw 5 netball teams from the Newark and Grantham area and were a mixture of regular netball club teams and teams and players returning to the sport through the back to netball scheme. The event was well supported by Newark Shooters netball club and Fenland netball club with VISPA volunteers helping throughout the day with officiating, refreshments, timekeeping and scoring.

The winning team was Muskham Mavericks who won all 4 matches but had close competition from Newark Shooters and the Shooting Stars team who are the newly formed Newark back to Netball team.

Grantham Fenlands Back 2 Netball team came 3rd winning two games and losing two. This is the second tournament the Grantham ladies have now entered and they are now looking forward to September when Back 2 Netball enters the Lincolnshire League
