England Netball achieves Advanced Level of Child Protection Standards

England Netball is pleased to have achieved the Advanced Level of the ‘Standards for Safeguarding and Protecting Children in Sport’.

Jude Toasland from the CPSU commented:

'The Child Protection in Sport Unit have been impressed by the commitment shown by England Netball towards safeguarding children and young people playing netball. We are pleased that England Netball has now achieved both the Intermediate and Advanced Safeguarding Standards, with the support of the CPSU, the Board, staff and volunteers working in netball.

Paul Clark CEO is pleased that netball has achieved the Standards and thanks the volunteer workforce for really getting behind the safeguarding message:

‘We are delighted to have achieved the Advanced level of the Safeguarding Standards, this gives us a strong foundation from which to excel in safeguarding with staff and volunteers working together for the benefit of our young players. We are the number one participation team sport for women and girls in England and with that comes a huge responsibility, one that we do not take lightly.
As we move to the new safeguarding framework for sport under the direction and leadership of the Child Protection in Sport Unit we are more than able to demonstrate that young people are at the heart of safeguarding in netball. We look forward to continued work with our young members and our committed volunteer workforce.’

England Netball submitted our first application in December and have quickly acted upon feedback to ensure that the conditional pass became a full pass this month. We were required to further address the links between breaches of our Codes of Conduct and disciplinary action and to consider barriers to reporting for some young people.

During the last 18 months we have demonstrated our commitment to safeguarding by completing both the Intermediate and Advanced levels of the Standards but also by working through some key objectives which are really helping to shape safeguarding in netball in England:

· We have trained and resourced a team of Time to Listen Tutors and over 80 people have so far benefitted from the training given.

· England Netball staff and the Board of Directors have benefitted from direct delivery training from Sportscoach UK and the Child Protection in Sport
Unit respectively and online safeguarding training forms a standard part of the induction process for all staff.

· The safeguarding pages of the website are packed full of resources and the latest information to help adults fulfil their safeguarding responsibilities
  at club level.

· A growing database of 220 Club Safeguarding Officers has been created and 3 quarterly newsletters have been well received.

· We have CRB checked over 1500 volunteers working in netball, moving from a predominantly paper based application to a streamline, cheaper
  and more efficient online process

· The Youth Advisory Group designed a Be Safe card that went to 30,000 junior members, this is now undergoing a redesign to include more useful
tips on internet safety. This theme is already key on the youth pages which also includes anti-bullying information
