How to Achieve Gold

At the end of the 2009/2010 season Brigg decided that during the next 12 months a focus would be on coach / umpire CPD - and some great success has come from it. This has not only resulted in personal development for coaches and umpires, but has impacted on the development of the club and players in general

In May 2011 - Vanessa received her Level 3 coaching award
In September - Stuart successfully completed and passed his Level 1
In November - Molly and Karen successfully completed and passed their level 1's
December saw Tracy and Sarah complete and pass their level 1's and Vickie her level 2

Members also attended various coaching confrences and the AENA workshops

Well not to be out done - our umpires also wanted to upgrade and 5 members attended a beginner course in May 2 more went on a C award course in Septmeber and 1 went on the B award course in March. All the above resulted in the Club gaining its Gold Caps

We are now looking forward to these umpires taking their qualifications in 2011/12 season.

Lightning coach calls time on illustrious playing career - Dec 2011/12

Loughborough Lightning Head Coach, Olivia Murphy, has retired from playing netball prior to the start of the 2012 Fiat National Superleague.Olivia, who has been part of the coaching team for the Loughborough University based Lightning franchise since 2007, has been one of the finest English players to appear on the netball court.Olivia was arguably the best player of her generation, playing for England on 95 occasions, and selected as captain for the national team from May 2000 up to March 2006.
During her illustrious career Olivia won bronze medals at the 1998 and 2006 Commonwealth Games, and also a bronze at the 1999 World Championhips.Speaking of her playing career Olivia Murphy said: “I’ve had lots of highlights both nationally and internationally, but if I have to pick one it would be my first Commonwealth Games bronze medal play off match against South Africa. It was the first time netball had been included in the Games so it was very special.” Olivia played in her finale Superleague season last year where her court vision, calming influence and experience helped continue the development of a young Lightning side. However with a new squad in place for the 2012 season Olivia has decided to focus her energies into the full time coaching role. “As much as I enjoyed playing last season, I have come to the decision that to reach the high standards I have always set myself, my body is no longer able to cope with the day to day training required to play top class netball. Plus it would also be unfair on the team for me to try and continue playing this season. “Although I will miss playing, my decision has been made easier by the exciting, young and talented group of players that Lightning have secured for the new season. Therefore I am looking forward to supporting their development as players, but also helping them to realise their aspirations to play on the international stage.”
Andy Borrie, Deputy Director of Sport at Loughborough University said: “Olivia has been an inspiration to generations of Loughborough and England netballers. The game as whole will be poorer for not seeing her on the court but Lightning has always known this moment would come. Liv feels this is the right time for her to step away and whilst we will miss her world class skills on court we will gain even more from her as a coach. “In Olivia we are incredibly fortunate to have had a world class player and now an emerging world class coach and leader for the Loughborough’s netball programmes.” Loughborough Lightning will begin the new 2012 Superleague season on Saturday 21 January with a home fixture against Team Northumbria. The match starts at 6pm. To attend the match you can now purchase tickets through the new Lightning ticket online portal, powered by Ticketline.

England Netball has a fantastic and long standing relationship with Mitre, with whom we have been working with to design a specific ball for both competitions.”

Gary Hibbert, Managing Director at Mitre said ‘’We are so proud to be involved in the FIAT Superleague again and the newly created Cathedral City Fast Net Grand Prix tournaments. We believe these tournaments are the driving force behind the National team’s development, which is testament to the fact the England Girls won the recent World Netball Series in Liverpool, beating the No1 and No2 team’s in the world rankings, Australia and New Zealand’’.

Exciting rule changes set for Cathedral City Lighter Fast Net Grand Prix

Fast Net action returns in January and this is your first chance to watch England’s World Netball Series champions take to the court in the Cathedral City Lighter Fast Net Grand Prix. It will be a new experience for fans and teams as England Netball take the opportunity to trial rule changes to Fast Net to make the format even more exciting.

The rule changes that will be on show at the Grand Prix include; the nominated Head Coach for each side will be able to coach from the substitution box, even if a player is also present in the box. Goals scored outside the circle will be worth 3 points in normal play and remain at 4 in Powerplay periods. Perhaps the most anticipated alteration is in regards to the Powerplay themselves.

The general philosophy at the 2011 World Netball Series was be for both sides to take their Powerplay in the third quarter and attempt to nullify each other. However, at the beginning of every match at the Grand Prix, teams will flip a coin with the winner selecting which quarter they will use their Powerplay. The loser of the coin toss must then select a different quarter in which to use theirs.

FIAT Netball Superleague General Manager, Andy Crook believes that the changes will make for an improved viewing spectacle; he said “Fast Net has proven to be an electrifying form of the game and the rule changes we are implementing for the Cathedral City Lighter Grand Prix are looking to increase the pace and the excitement of the contest. We have an opportunity to trial proposed changes in this competition ahead of the World Netball Series 2012 to be held in Auckland.

“The rule changes are designed to encourage shooting from outside the circle, as we have seen how devastating this skill can be when executed at the World Netball Series. The fact that a nominated coach can coach from the substitution box should encourage greater tactical influence on the game and the change in Powerplays will add a different dynamic and opens the format up to a new way of thinking.”

There will be a thrilling weekend of Fast Net action as four northern teams contest the Manchester Conference on Saturday 7th January, with the four southern teams entering the competition on Sunday 8th January at the Surrey Conference.

The first chance to watch your England heroes in action will be at the Manchester Thunderdome as Northern Thunder, Loughborough Lightning, Team Northumbria and Yorkshire Jets do battle. World Netball Series winners, Emma Dovey and Laura Malcolm will be lining up for Thunder while England internationals Sophia Candappa and Rachel Shaw take to the court for Lightning and Jets respectively. Future England stars will also be on show as several players from the youth set-up will be in Manchester. The Jets have Natalie Haythornthwaite in their team and Kayley Moss could appear for Northumbria.

A day later and focus switches to the Surrey Sports Park as Celtic Dragons, Hertfordshire Mavericks, Surrey Storm and Team Bath go head to head. A smorgasbord of internationals will be on display as the likes of Rachel Dunn, Kadeen Corbin, Sasha Corbin, Pamela Cookey, Tamsin Greenway and Emma Thomas are set to compete.

The top two teams from each Conference then proceed to the Finals night on Friday 13th January, with Surrey once more the hosts. Tickets are still available for all three days action, with adult tickets priced at just £14 and juniors/concessions costing £12. With eight games to be played at each Conference session, this equates to less than £2 per match! Prices remain the same for the Finals night as four more monster clashes will decide the winner of the inaugural Cathedral City Lighter Fast Net Grand Prix.
